Cleaning Your Computer Monitor
![]() |
While many people still have the old Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors (as
our illustration shows), they are hardly worth mentioning here. They can be
cleaned nearly at your own discretion. However, when cleaning an LCD monitor
it may help to have a little in-sight as they have a little more value. The
LCD monitors are made of a very porous material. It is very soft and
pliable. Dirt and dust settle easily on them. If you wipe it with
the wrong materials and in the wrong way, you will alter the clarity of your
display significantly over time.
When enlightening you on the way I would (and do) clean an LCD monitor, it
is important to note that the manufacture of your monitor may have their own
views. So, if your monitor is still under their warranty, please refer to
the manufactures instructions. Otherwise, let me show you my safe and simple
method:
There's really nothing to it...
1. Just turn your monitor off.
2. Get a soft cotton cloth.
3. Moisten it with warm water.
4. Gently wipe either from top to bottom or left to right. Even a few easy
swipes in both directions is fine. But, avoid using a swirling motion as it
will wear a visible pattern in your LCD monitor.
If there is a lot of build-up of grime on your monitor, you may need a
stronger cleaning solution. In these cases I recommend using a mixture of warm water and vinegar. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners such as Windex as they will yellow
your screen over time. That's it! You'll keep your display looking nice and
clear for years!
